The Big UK Blackout

Is Great Britain about to be plunged into darkness?? With more than half of UK councils trialing the switching off of street lighting between midnight and 5.30am, Britains streets are about to become very dark indeed.

One solution for householders returning home after dark is the Light sensor bulb. The sensor is built into the bulb body and switches the unit on at dusk and off at Dawn. With an average lifespan of over 8000 hours and 75% - 80% energy savings over standard bulbs, these lamps will save you money too.

Simply install in your existing porch light fitting ensuring the sensor is facing out towards the daylight source. Available in a range of fittings and wattages.

Whitegoods’ Free Light Meter App

As any lighting professional knows – you never have a light meter when you want one! Well, a new app for iPhone 3 and 4 owners can keep a light meter always right in your pocket. Designed by the lighting experts at Whitegoods, the cool, new Light Meter App is simple to use and extremely intuitive – and is now available for free download.
This unique app can be used to measure light levels and will provide guidance on the appropriateness of that light level for different environments or tasks: i.e., “ideal for reading printed paper of high contrast” or “ideal for performing visual tasks of low contrast or very small size.” This dynamic information is shown on screen as light levels change, allowing the user to compare what they see to other applications. The app can be set to display results as lux or footcandles, depending on user preference. There is a timer function for hard-to-reach spots where the display is not readily in view.

Tips for lighting your bathroom 4

Mood Lighting

This is where you can have fun and be creative. At the very least you can dim the lights to provide a softer atmosphere, but you can enhance the night time lighting scene significantly with a few extra strategically positioned lights.

Recessed LED's at skirting height are great for providing a wash of light across the floor. One bright idea is to continue the bath panel down to just above the floor and position a strip of LED's behind it to cast a gentle glow out from behind the panel and make the bath appear to float. If you are building-in niches for display or storage, fit LED downlights to really bring it to life. Small wall-mounted LED lights can be used to illuminate designated spots in the bathroom and provide light up and down the wall. These can offer good alternative general illumination at night time, when more powerful lamps would be too strong
